| Family Friendly Project! Bring the kids! Manguson Children's Garden needs love! |
Agency: Magnuson Children's Garden
Description:
The mission of Magnuson Community Garden is to enhance the quality of urban life and strengthen community bonds by creating and sustaining an organic garden in Sand Point Magnuson Park that will foster environmental stewardship, horticultural education, rejuvenation, and recreation.
Volunteers will help out with important, routine summer maintenance in the garden:
• Weeding garden beds and paths
• Mulching bare soil here and there with wood chips
• Cutting back plants as needed to maintain good access on paths throughout the garden
Volunteer support is absolutely integral to the ability to use the Children’s Garden year-round as an “outdoor classroom” for both children and adults to receive gardening and nature education. Over the past several years, Seattle Works volunteers, Master Gardeners, and other community members have played a major role in the success of this garden and its programs!
Children as young as preschool age welcome to attend the event, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. We have child size tools and gloves on site, and plenty of nature art and exploration activities for them to do if they get tired of working and/or need to rest. Children under 16 need a permission slip from parents if they are not accompanied by a parent, and all children can receive service learning credit for hours worked. Thank you to Expedia for sponsoring monthly family-friendly projects!
