SERVICE TRIPS

Seattle Works is taking our volunteer programs on the road! Our goal is to provide you with more in-depth volunteer opportunities that can accommodate a variety of schedules and budgets.

New opportunities are constantly in the mix. Last year we sent a team to the woods to build trails for a weekend, three teams for a week each to the Gulf Coast to help recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina volunteer, and a team to Peru for ten days of helping to build a school and touring Machu Picchu.

Here's what we have on our 2009 calendar so far:
-Mount Rainier
-Thailand

Mount Rainier
Fri 7/31-Sun 8/2 in partnership with Washington Trails Association.

We had a great time! Check out stories and pictures on our blog.

Thailand

Fri 11/13- Sat11/21 (plus optional three-day extension to Bangkok) in partnership with Crooked Trails.

After having great success with Crooked Trails in Peru last fall, we've decided to head to the land of happiness and the Andaman Sea.

Located close to Phuket, the famous Thai beach resort, local villagers are well aware of the dangers of mass tourism and are controlling mass tourism development in their villages by developing their own community based tourism program which incorporates homestays, tours and community service projects. It is this project (developed by the people) that you will join in.

The tsunami dramatically altered the traditional way of fishing which was environmentally friendly and sustainable with a respect for nature and conserving fish and supplies. You will be working on a mangrove restoration project and helping to restore a badly damaged bridge. The planting of mangrove trees is critical to helping restore the fish populations.

There will be time to take walks to waterfalls and spectacular beaches. Villagers can bring you fishing, and take you to visit their old villages that were washed away. They will share their customs, culture, art, food and laughter with you. This will be a truly amazing time for you and them.

During your home-stay your accommodations will be simple yet comfortable and the food is traditional, nourishing and grown locally.

Cost: $1800 + international flights (This includes all on-ground transportation, all domestic flights, all accommodations, all meals during the village stays and a donation for the service project; it does not include airfare to and from Thailand. $440 for optional extension to Bangkok. Seattle Works facilitates these trips as a service to the community and does not receive any of this fee.

Learn more and apply to be part of the team through Crooked Trails! Registration closes two weeks prior to the trip.
