SEATTLE WORKS DAY RECAP

 

Thanks to everyone who rolled up their sleeves on Seattle Works Day 2008! You are tremendous.

WHAT DID PARTICIPANTS THINK?
- 88.5% of participants said they were either somewhat or very

satisfied with Seattle Works Day
- 88.6% would recommend the event to someone else
- 83.5% were inspired to do more in the community

 

WHAT DID WE ACCOMPLISH?

We protected native plants

Beacon Alliance of Neighbors - cleared threatened ecosystems of non-native plant species, planted trees and practiced forestry

Cascade Land Conservancy, Cheasty Green Space and Maple School Ravine - removed invasive ivy and blackberries, helped with forest restoration
Gatewood Elementary - removed invasive ivy and roots, laid burlap weed barrier, laid mulch
Golden Gardens - removed invasives and spread mulch
Green Lake - removed invasives, pruned, mulched and planted
Heron Habitat Helpers - mulched, weeded and whacked away at invasive plants
Judkins Park - rode a slope of invasive plants and mulched

Lake Washington Boulevard - removed ivy from trees
Lincoln Park - removed invasive plants along the shoreline

Marymoor Park - controlled weeds and removed blackberry roots

Mountains to Sound/Issaquah Creek Basin - removed invasive plants to allow native vegetation and wildlife to thrive
The Nature Consortium - replaced invasive plant species with natives
Warren G. Magnuson Park - removed invasive plants and spread mulch

Ravenna Park - removed invasive blackberry and ivy bushes

Seattle Center - removed, dug, and pulled ivy

Seward Park - spread wood chips, mulched, and removed blackberry roots to prevent re-growth

Yesler Creek - removed invasive vegetation
 

We increased access to outdoor recreation opportunities

Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club - built a bicycle trails course under the I-5 freeway
Camp Long - resurfaced trails, dug ditches and replaced culverts

Friends of Interlaken Park - trail maintenance, sheet mulched, and invasive removal

Pratt Park - mulched tree wells, cleaned play and picnic areas to improve park experience

 

We supported pesticide-free beautification and organic gardening

Angel Morgan P-Patch - weeded, spread woodchips and composted

Marra Farms - prepared vegetable beds, sowed seeds and seedlings to maintain organic gardens
Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Association - painted safety stripes, removed graffiti and gardened to maintain farmer's market location

We cleaned and greened up community gathering spaces
Golden Gardens - cleaned the beach area of illegal fire pits

Magnuson Community Center - completed water access area, removed grass and mulched to improve soil and plant health

Pacific Science Center - drained and cleaned of the fountain ponds to combat mildew and protect ducks

Seattle Art Museum Olympic Sculpture Park - cleaned up beach area, maintained paths and pulled invasives to provide a welcomed space for visitors in an urban setting

South Portage Bay Park - trail cleared, removal of invasives and small trees to preserve the wetland as a lived biology lab
 

SEATTLE WORKS DAY BRINGS TOGETHER TEAMS OF CO-WORKERS, FRIENDS, ALUMNI AND PROFESSIONAL GROUPS FOR A FUN AND EASY WAY TO GIVE BACK.
