PROJECT DETAILS FOR JUST IN TIME - WARREN G. MAGNUSON PARK
Depending on when you sign up, you will likely receive an email from Seattle Works with this information. Just in case - here's what you need to know!
What do expect
The event will take place rain or shine so please come prepared for the weather... hopefully we'll end up needing sunscreen! We suggest that volunteers dress in layers of older clothes that include long pants, long sleeve shirt and a jacket. Durable footwear such as work boots, hiking boots or running shoes are recommended. Project hosts will provide any necessary tools. If you have your own work gloves, it's recommended you bring them.
We strongly encourage that you and your team find ways to carpool or take public transportation to Saturday's events. Projects will start promptly at noon and end at 3:30pm. Water and some Clif Bars will be available at the project site, but please come having eaten breakfast or lunch and bring a refillable water bottle. Food, drinks and music will follow at the Seattle Works Day AfterParty at Seattle Center. Make sure to bring your ID if you plan on having drinks! (we do have to card...)
Project overview
Warren G. Magnuson Park sits on a mile-long stretch of Lake Washington's shoreline in northeastern Seattle, and at 350 acres it is Seattle's second largest park. This former Navy facility is rapidly becoming home to a unique combination of activities such as swimming, walking, kite flying, sports fields, and natural areas. As the park features continue to expand, you can become part of the planning and restoration process.
This project will focus on removing invasive plants and then mulching the area with wood chips. The area was planted several years ago and is providing habitat for wildlife, but invasive plants are now encroaching on the natives. Without this work, invasives such as ivy and blackberry will quickly become monocultures across our landscape. So join together to achieve a common goal, improve habitat for wildlife, and increase appreciation for healthy greenspaces within the city.
Directions
From Sand Point Way, enter Magnuson Park at the 74th St. entrance. Drive straight ahead and turn left at 63rd Ave. SE. Turn left again at NE 77th St. Follow the road around a curve and under a viaduct to a parking lot. A Seattle Parks Department truck will be waiting there.
Public Transportation
